Chapter Sixteen
Peter had to take a lecture from someone who swore up and down that he had nothing against gays and who kept bringing up the movie Firestarter as if government officials would pop out from behind a tropical bush at any minute and hurry him away. Reminding Jesse that he could freeze, not burn, things did no good. Jesse only probed harder. He was especially curious why Peter knew some things but not everything.
Sitting under the roof of the gazebo with a pail of cold beers as a centerpiece, Peter did his best to keep his contribution to the conversation small. He was still shaken by the severity of his earlier outburst and despite being grateful that he had not harmed one of his groomsmen, he figured Jesse might be more forgiving if he at least played the part of a humble sinner.
Jesse was certainly doing his part to play the pious one.
With enough calories in front of him to shame a body builder, Peter switched between his plate of fiery jerk chicken, rice, beans and vegetables and his appetizer sampler with conch fritters. When he wasn’t gobbling down one thing from either plate, he was taking a bite from his basket of rolls or taking a drink from his rum-laden tropical lemonade. It kept him from having to talk at least and definitely gave the impression he was too absorbed with eating to give Jesse his full attention.
What could he say? He could fill a small lake with all that he didn’t know and all that Jesse wanted to know. He prayed for more than a moment’s break, a change in subject or David’s return. He thought that he had one of the three as Jesse looked past him and waved.
“Hey, there,” Jesse exclaimed with a sardonic grin.
Please be some female or Dave, Peter prayed. Be anyone who might take Jesse’s attention off of me. He didn’t turn around to see who was behind him. It didn’t matter as long as Jesse was distracted from him, or so he thought.
“Afternoon,” came Micah’s voice from behind him. “Well, evening, actually.”
Unfuckingbelievable. Peter closed his eyes and cursed himself. His luck had gone from worse to worse times ten. After putting a fork-full of food into his mouth, Peter removed it. His appetite stalled in light of the fact that breathing was difficult enough. He lowered the heavy fork back to his plate, but he kept his head down. He didn’t want Micah to see any guilt in his eyes, and he definitely didn’t want to feed into Jesse’s self-righteousness.
“Hope you’re enjoying your stay,” Micah said. “Sure looks like it.”
Jesse nodded his agreement. “Oh, yeah… we’ve been having a really wild time. Really. The fun just refuses to stop.” Jesse pulled out one of the empty chairs, the one between himself and Peter, and offered it to Micah. “Here. Have a seat. Join us.”
Peter’s eyes flashed toward Micah, hoping to catch his gaze. If only he had the power of telepathy he could give his lover a head’s up, get him away from the Grand Inquisitor.
